Prestigious UNESCO Award for CCDC Governor
We were all very proud, here in Cambridge, to hear the news that CCDC Governor, Professor Reiko Kuroda of the Tokyo University of Science, is to be honoured as one of the five 2013 L’Oreal-UNESCO Women in Science Laureates.
This is an incredibly prestigious award, recognizing as it does the global influence of the world’s top female scientists. Professor Kuroda’s insightful basic research into the chirality at the molecular level, whether biological or non-biological, has important implications for manufacturing drugs and agricultural chemicals, for the study of proteins relevant to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease, for the study of animal body asymmetry, and even for the origin of life on this planet.
Professor Kuroda is hugely respected internationally. She received an honorary professorship from the Sichuan University, Chengdu, China and an Honorary Doctorate from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. She is a member of the Science Council of Japan as well as a Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. She has also won several other prestigious awards, including the Saruhashi Prize, the Nissan Science Prize, the Yamazaki-Teiichi Prize, and the Commendation for Science and Technology by the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
Professor Kuroda has served as a Governor of CCDC since 2006. CCDC’s Governors are drawn from world-leading universities, research foundations, pharmaceutical enterprises and scientific publishing organisations. They provide invaluable guidance to our organisation, helping to inform and shape our plans.
We are, indeed, fortunate to have Professor Kuroda in that role and we congratulate her heartily on her well-deserved recognition.
