CSD Heroes: H.-K.Fun
Our second CSD Hero is H.‑K.Fun, currently 9th in our annual CSD author statistics! We would like to thank Fun for his contribution by highlighting some key facts drawn from data in the CSD!
About H.-K.Fun
Fun Hoong-Kun is an Emeritus Professor of Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, Malaysia. He completed his B.Sc. in Physics at University of Malaya and obtained his M.S. and his Ph.D. in experimental Solid-State Physics (Solid State Electron-Nuclear Double Resonance technique) from Purdue University. Fun is a self‑taught crystallographer and features in the World Directory of Crystallographers.1,2 He has many academic credentials and was recognized by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia as one of the “Top Research Scientists Malaysia” in 2013.
Fun Hoong-Kun and the CSD
Fun is currently 9th in our annual list of most prolific authors in the CSD with over 1,800 entries. His first structure, shown below, (CSD refcodes VISNAM) was published in 1991. Fun has published his structures in 36 different journals with over 1,000 different co-authors. Fun published a tremendous 330 entries in 2010.

Fun’s entries include 46 different element types, 101,226 atomic coordinates, and cover 43 different space groups. His structure with the most atomic coordinates (450) is a published in Acta Cryst. E, (CSD refcode SOYKOH) in 2009, shown below.

Fun’s structures are predominantly organic (85%, 1,566 structures) with a smaller proportion of metal-organic (15%, 273 structures) substances. His structures have an average R-factor of 4.726 and 15% of his structures have modelled disorder.

Each structure is valuable individually, and collectively they contain a wealth of data that can be used by scientists worldwide. Thank you, Fun, for all your efforts and for all your wonderful structures!

This is the 2nd blog in our CSD-Heroes series featuring the most prolific authors in the CSD. We are highlighting statistics and structures to celebrate our heroes achievements and to thank them for their phenomenal contribution. If you would like to share stories about these crystallographers, some of their fascinating structures or tell us about your heroes of the CSD you can tweet us on @ccdc_cambridge
