Frontiers of Chemistry Education Panel Webinar
Frontiers of Chemistry Education: Preparing Students for Emerging Career Paths
Technology is evolving at a faster pace than ever before — and with it, science career paths change too.
How can educators, institutions, and students themselves best prepare for career paths that may not yet exist?
Join our panel to explore key questions for chemistry students and educators, to learn how to best prepare for the future of work and careers.
This webinar is part of a series celebrating 60 years of the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). The world’s largest database of small-molecule organic and metal-organic structures in the world. All are experimentally determined, fully curated, and used by thousands of scientists globally.
Who should attend?
- University level students and educators in chemistry or related sciences
- University staff involved in careers coaching or advice
- Anyone involved in supporting early careers scientists
- Anyone navigating (or about to navigate) the jobs market as an early career scientist in chemistry and related fields
The panel:
- Claire Murray — independent researcher and public speaker focused on engagement, citizen science, and science education.
- Chris Jeffs — careers advisor at Oxford University and freelance
- Samuel Tetteh — senior lecturer in chemistry
- Julia Gasol Cardona — recent chemistry PhD graduate, now working in ED&I and research culture at CMAC
Questions we will explore:
- What do you think will be the most significant change in chemistry careers in the next 10 years?
- What skills adjacent to core chemistry should students look to develop
- How important are data, coding, AI, ML skills for chemistry students?
- How can educators best adapt to evolving fields of research and industry and prepare students for jobs that might not yet exist?
- Will there ever be a replacement for a skilled synthetic chemist?
- How do combined courses or elective classes play a role in broadening student skills for future careers?
- What steps can universities more broadly take to prepare students for changing careers landscape?
- What advice would you give chemistry students graduating in the coming year?
