Why would I want to use a grid-engine based environment rather than PVM?
Solution
While PVM is OK for small scale use (maybe up to 10 or 20 nodes in a VM), it doesn't scale well above that, and lacks much of the finesse of a proper queueing scheduler, making it unsuitable for use in an environment of managed and equitably shared resources.
Please note that the 2019 CSD Release is the last to include the ability to use GOLD with Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) for UNIX-based platforms. We recommend using a grid-engine based environment rather than PVM.
