Licensing FAQ

How does the GoldMine licensing system work?

GoldMine is priced on a per-user basis. A single user licence will allow the use of GoldMine on any platform and on any machine, but only for the username that the licence is registered to. A limited number of GoldMine licences are usually made available to licensees of GOLD after they have signed and completed the appropriate licensing paperwork. Additional licences may be purchased on request.

Evaluation Keys - A GoldMine evaluation key will permit you to evaluate GoldMine on whichever machines in your organisation you wish and on the platforms/operating systems requested. It is intended to allow as many users as you wish to evaluate the program concurrently. An evaluation licence for GoldMine is not user-restricted.

Full Keys - On purchase of GoldMine, licenses will be tied to a specific username. Registration is achieved either online via the GoldMine program, or offline via a number of methods. Prices are available by emailing

How do I register GoldMine using one of my available licences?

When attempting to open or create a GoldMine database, if no licence is present you will be asked to specify a licence file. We would recommend using the file called ccdc_licence.dat in the GOLD Suite distribution, but if you do not have write permission to this file, you can specify any file in a directory where you do have write permission. Once specified, you will be presented with the registration screen. In many cases, the GoldMine Site number and confirmation codes, as well as your current username, will be pre-populated for you. If they are not, you will need to ensure that the correct values are entered here. Once done, you have several options to complete registration:

Online Registration - If you have internet access, clicking the "Online Registration" button will complete the registration process for you.

Offline Registration - Click on the "Register Offline" button to register via email. Cut and paste the information the registration window presents to you into an email and send it to goldmine_licence@ccdc.cam.ac.uk. This is an automated service that should return a GoldMine licence for the specified user to you by return of email. Cut and paste the returned licence text into the box provided in GoldMine's registration dialog, or directly into the licence file you specified.

If you encounter any difficulties using either of these automated systems, please contact

Evaluation Licenses - An evaluation licence should have been provided to you when you took out your GoldMine evaluation. This must be pasted into your licence file, and this file selected when given the opportunity to do so as described above.

Further details on GoldMine licensing can be found in the GoldMine Installation Notes.

How can I tell what usernames are currently registered against our available licences?

Customers can view their available licences, as well as what usernames are curretnly registered, by visiting the GoldMine User Registration & Administration site. This will require your GoldMine site number and confirmation code in order to access.

Do I need to run a GoldMine licence server?

The simple answer is no. For either evaluation or full licences, GoldMine only needs access to the licence file - no licence server is required.

How do I move a GoldMine licence from one use to another?

If an existing GoldMine licence is allocated to a user that is no longer using the program, that licence can be re-allocated by contacting and detailing the username that is no longer being used.

How do I use the Mogul or IsoStar links from within GoldMine?

GoldMine allows Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) subscribers to link through to Mogul and IsoStar installations from within GoldMine. Doing so will require the use of one of your CSD licences on the machine where you are running GoldMine. If an existing CSD system licence file cannot be found, GoldMine will show the CSD product registration page when attempting to access Mogul or IsoStar features. Note: the Site Number and Confirmation Code required here are those for the CSD System. These will differ from your GoldMine Site Number and Confirmation Code. Registering GoldMine's CSD links in this way will tie one of your CSD licences to the machine where GoldMine is installed.

For more details on registering these CSD components, please refer to the CSD System Installation Notes.
