Licensing FAQs

How does licensing work for the CSD System?

The CSD System is licensed on a geographical site basis. Access is subject to a Licence of Access Agreement covering the calendar year from 1st January to 31st December.

Operation is node locked. This means that for each CSD license purchased, a single installation of the CSD package may be made. However, there is no limit to the number of users that may access this installation.

All components of the CSD package are set to expire a short time after the end of the calendar year. Additionally, ConQuest, Mogul and some of the advanced features of Mercury require registration for use on each computer. This registration occurs once only when ConQuest or Mogul, or registered features of Mercury are used for the first time, and can be done either online or via email.

My version of the CSD says it has expired, how do I get the latest version?

The latest version of the CSD system should be mailed out to all customers well before the previous version has expired. However, this cannot happen until your institution has signed and returned the schedule for the next licensing period. If you have not yet received the latest version of ConQuest, this is the most likely reason - please contact if you require further help.

How do I move an existing ConQuest, Mogul or registered Mercury* installation to another computer?

*Some of the advanced features of Mercury require to be registered: registration is only possible for CSD System subscribers.

Each version of ConQuest, Mogul and Mercury (registered features) allows for one automated "transfer" of an existing licence. Simply install the program(s) on the new computer, select "Register Online" and then the "Transfer an Existing Licence" option.

If this option is not available, or if you need to move additional licences, please contact with details of serial number(s) given by ConQuest, Mogul or Mercury for both the old installation (see About [program name] in the Help menu) and the new installation (on startup) and they will arrange for the appropriate licences to be generated.

I reformatted my hard drive / changed my IP address and now ConQuest/Mogul/registered Mercury features doesn't/don't work

The CSD System licensing mechanism requires in part on some data derived from your hard drive (for Windows) or your IP address (for UNIX). If these change, then this can fool the CSD System components into thinking that you have installed them onto another computer. You will need to transfer your licence as detailed above.

How do I install an IP-based licence?

IP-based licences for the CSD system are provided as a set of serial number/validation code keys for each of the IP addresses or ranges that the licence was requested for. The licence key for each IP address range will take the form:

SN_1234_1234_1234_1234 = ('','1234-1234-1234-1234-1234')

Each IP address range licence key should be copied to a separate line in a plain text file called csd_licence.dat and the file saved to a location that is accessible to each user that will be running the CSD software. Normally the most convenient place where the CSD software will attempt to locate the licence file that meets these criteria on Windows and Linux is in the same directory as the CSD database files (where the as533be.* files are located). By default these locations would be:

UNIX:

$CSDHOME/csd/csd_licence.dat

Windows:

<INSTALLDIR>\CSD V5.33\csd_licence.dat
where <INSTALLDIR> is e.g. C:\Program Files\CCDC.

Mac OS X:

On Mac OS X the software attempts to locate the licence file in the users home directory please make sure the csd_licence.dat file is saved to that location.

Alternatively on all three the environment variable CCDC_CSD_LICENCE_FILE can be used to direct CSD software to read a licence file stored in a non-default location.

How do I check on what machines are currently licensed?

Selecting "Current Licensing Information" from the Help menu in ConQuest will allow you to see what type of licence you currently have and how many ConQuest installations have currently been registered. The serial number and validation code given should match with those reported by "About ConQuest", "About Mogul" and About Mercury" from the appropriate Help menu.

How can I purchase additional licences?

Additional licences for the CSD System can be purchased via credit card by selecting "Purchase Extra Licenses" from the ConQuest Help menu and completing the resultant web form. Alternatively, email with details of the extra licences you want to purchase and they will be happy to help further.
