Scientific FAQs

How do I obtain IsoStar?

IsoStar is distributed as part of the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) System which is released in November of each year. For further information on obtaining a copy please see Obtaining Products.

Can I use IsoStar on a PC?

Yes. IsoStar is a client-server system that uses an HTTP server to make data available to PC and UNIX operating systems. The HTTP server can be run on any of the UNIX platforms that IsoStar supports (see: which platforms are supported?).
Note: it is not currently possible to run the server on a PC. For further information please refer to the IsoStar Online Technical Index.

Can I add scatterplots for groups which are not included in the standard IsoStar library?

Yes. IsoGen is the program that was used to calculate the scatterplots in the IsoStar database and it is available to users so that they can calculate their own customised scatterplots. Plots calculated with IsoGen can be viewed and manipulated with the IsoStar control window in the usual way. However, two restrictions should be noted.

  • IsoGen can only be used to calculate scatterplots from the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD), not from the Protein Data Bank (PDB).
  • The external scaling method of contouring density surfaces is unavailable for user-generated scatterplots.
For further information please refer to the IsoStar Online Help.
