Frank Allen receives Herman Skolnik Award from Chemical Information Division of the American Chemical Society.
The 2003
Herman Skolnik Award of the American Chemical Society's Division of Chemical
Information was presented to CCDC's Executive Director Frank Allen at the 226th
ACS National Meeting in New York on 9 September 2003.
The award recognises outstanding contributions in the field of chemical information.
As part of the award, Frank was invited to organise a one-day symposium at the New
York Meeting and this was devoted to "Crystallographic Databases and their Applications".

CCDC paper included in ISI 'Fast-Breaking' papers list.
The most recent paper describing the Cambridge Structural Database (The Cambridge Structural Database: a quarter of a million crystal structures and rising, Acta Cryst., B58, 380-388, 2002) was identified by ISI as a 'fast-breaking' paper in chemistry for June 2003, and was highlighted on their website at

CCDC hosts Regional Junior Crystal Growing Competition prize giving.
CCDC was again pleased to host the regional prize-giving in the National Schools Crystal Growing Competition, sponsored by the British Crystallographic Association and the CCDC. Prizes were awarded to very enthusiastic young crystallographers in the age range 7 -11 years from nine local primary schools for the quality of their specimens of potash alum. The event was organised by Harry Powell of the BCA.

BCA/CCG - CCDC Prize for Younger Scientists presented.
The CCDC Prize for Younger Scientists of the Chemical Crystallography Group of the
British Crystallographic Association was presented to Dr Ivana Radosavljevic-Evans
of the University of Durham at the BCA Meeting in York on 16 April by Frank Allen,
CCDC Executive Director. Dr Radosavljevic-Evans then presented her Prize Lecture:
Structure characterisation of complex oxides by powder diffraction.

CCDC paper in 'most cited list' of papers in the first 125 years of J. Amer. Chem. Soc.
A list of the most highly cited papers in J. Amer. Chem. Soc. has the following paper at number 60:
Taylor, R.; Kennard, O. Crystallographic Evidence for the Existence of C-H...O, C-H...N, and C-H...Cl Hydrogen Bonds. JACS, 1982, 104, 5063-5070.
This is the most highly cited paper ever in JACS from the Department of Chemistry in Cambridge, having received 1081 citations by the end of 2002.
This crucial paper finally proved that C-H donors do take part in hydrogen bonds, and ended years of controversy following Jerry Donohue's very definitive (1968) statement that the answer to the question "What is a C-H...O hydrogen bond?" was quite unequivocally "It isn't"!
